Advices for installation of AQUALIN®

  1. Receiving inspection test of AQUALIN® before installation

Before the installation AQUALIN® has to be controlled for obviously impurities.
  2. Wetting the filter coal

The pores of the AQUALIN® have to be wetted before the filter has to be taken into operation. The air inside the granulations and little air bubbles outside have to take away.

AQUALIN®0,8 - 1,8 mm   ca.    48 h
AQUALIN®1,4 - 2,5 mm   ca.    48 h

While the wetting the pH-value possible increases, because of an alkali reaction. Therefore the wash water has to be replaced several times.

It is not allowed to discharge the wash water into sees or rivers with a population of fishes, if the pH-value of the wash-water is higher than 8.5.

  1. Peel off undersized particles

Using a mix of air and water to backwash the filter is best. Thus undersized particles (which are produced by smashing during the filling) are flushed to the top layer. Then it is necessary to peel off the undersized particles manual before starting the filter process.
  2. Steps to be done before regular operation

After peel off the undersized particles the filter is able to put into pre - operation. The pH-value and the concentration of chlorine (free and bounded) have to be checked after 5 min. The filtrate has to be checked visual. If the filtrate is clear and the chlorine value is in the right level the filter can be put into operation.
  3. Steps to be done after regular operation

During the fist two weeks of operation the filter should be back washed once a day in order to remove rests of undersized particles and scarify the filter material.

The pH-value in the filtrate has to be controlled.
  4. Option if necessary: „Flushing in acid milieu“

The basic material of AQUALIN® is brown coal. In rare cases iron compounds are included into the coal particles. It is impossible to exclude this iron compound during the production process. Thus it is possible that a yellowish/brownish deposit appears around the filter nozzles and inside the inspection glass during the first processing weeks. In these rare cases a flushing in acid milieu should be done as follows:

    a) Open the filter and decrease the water level by 40 cm. The filter lay has to be covered with water after decreasing of water level.

    b) By slowly addition of hydrochloric acid (not sulphuric acid) the pH-value is to decrease to 3 – 4 (lower values are better). The hydrochloric acid should be uniformly distributed into the filter by using the air flushing. Please check pH-value permanent by pH measuring paper.

    c) Please check the pH value during the next 4 h. If the pH-value increases, do a re-dosage of chlorine acid.

    d) After 4 h the filter has to be cleared up with fresh water until the water is clear (Attention: Do not empty the filter. The dilution chlorine acid has to flush out).

    e) Please repeat step a) to d) twice and watch the time for clearing the filtrate. The time to clear the filtrate should be explicit shorter from washing to washing. If necessary repeat the steps a) to d) several times.

After clearing the filtrate the filter can be put into operation.

These advices are no instruction of installing; they are only a support for the handling of filter coal.
